PLAYING CARD MOTIF JEWELlERY - DIOR IN HEARTS
The playing card motif Dior jewellery, designed by John Galliano, is highly prized among both collectors and jewellery lovers. Issued in both the fine and costume jewellery ranges, the theme, Dior in Hearts (J’adior- or I love Dior), was repeated in myriad variations, on both plain faced “playing cards” and paved “playing cards”. The playing card motif jewellery was issued in both the fine and fashion ranges,as well as on bracelets, earrings and necklaces. In the fine jewellery range there was also issued a single diamond trump card.
The bracelet in this listing is an example of the micro pave in gold-tone.

THE SPECS
I do not know the exact composition of the metal just that it doesn’t tarnish and is hypoallergenic.

THE CONDITION
The condition of this item is excellent. d as I see no scratches, and whoever owned it either used it very little, or not at all. The reverse of the pave side is shown here in the photographs and it is without a scratch or defect of any kind.
I’m pleased to say the condition is immaculate.

Not a single stone or scratch or discolouration

THE INSPIRATION

FINE JEWELLERY
Another successful strategy of design, continued by Galliano, was creating costume jewellery which was a perfect substitute for fine jewellery. As I have already mentioned, the playing card motif was issued in both fine jewellery and the costume jewellery range. Like the military Dior dog tag, it was another way of reusing the brand name in a playful context. That the very same design was worked in solid pure metals and the costume range demonstrates that this was indeed the intention, that the design was meant to look “real” -and it does.

PLAYFULNESS
The central feature is a playing card, yet he has been playful with other themes, such as j’adore Dior, by selecting the suit of the card as Hearts, although Spades have the highest value when playing cards. He also designed a range of jewellery which used Dice, he is referring directly to play, probably gambling, and through that, also insinuating the idea of luckiness,\\

THE FINEST MATERIALS

Using the finest of materials made this design strategy functional. The patina of the gold toned version here is that of a yellow gold. The exact mixture may be a brand secret. Apart from the base metal, by law, no hallmarking is required. What I can say is that it “reads” as genuine gold. Without taking the bracelet from. wearer and examining it with a jewellers’ loupe, you really would not be able to tell if this was from the fine or costume jewellery range.

THE OCCASION As Galliano’s designs were so playful, and also, in a sense, modest, they are often wearable for every possible occasion, like this bracelet

Personally, I see this, and indeed most of Galliano’s designs, as unisex. Specifically all of the pendant ‘tag’ type necklaces like this one and the military dog tag, are, by merit of their nuanced playfulness and thematic juxtaposition, androgynous. His more elaborate necklaces and those which were very feminine in their theme, like the leather bow chokers, would have been feminine for me, but the playing cards, and the tags, as they are just a simple pendant on a chain, really are androgynous and unisex. The purpose is to affiliate and describe yourself by the name Dior, whoever you are (and wherever you are going).

FASHION JEWELLERY AS AN INVESTMENT

From the pragmatic to aesthetic, continuity of design and continuity of successful strategies, such as collaboration with other designers, are what made Christian Dior/Dior jewellery so much ahead of the other houses, and kept it ahead long after the designers death. The collaboration with Galliano was an incredibly successful enterprise, his designs being incredibly different, very daring, yet he ties it in to the greater story by sticking to certain design strategies, like length and adjustability, and using the highest quality materials.

Although all Dior/Christian Dior jewellery increases in value, the collaborations are of especial interest to collectors and while some of the earliest collaborative pieces, like the fluers Tremblant, with Mitchell Maer, may be so expensive as to be out of the reach of most people, the collaboration with Galliano, though expensive, is still relatively affordable and is possibly the best investment opportunity.

FASION JEWELLERY CARE

Although this necklace looks identical to its fine jewellery counterpart, it is costume jewellery. This actually means that it requires MORE care, not less, to remain in top condition. It should be kept away from direct sunlight in collectors’ standard storage, so that it does not rub against other jewellery.

It’s important to think of costume jewellery as the "finishing touch" which means it goes on last and comes off first. Adorn yourself after showering, dressing and applying makeup. When back home, take it off and place it lovingly in its box out of sunlight.

Cleaning- When necessary, clean it by hand with delicate costume jewellery cleaner, never use an ultrasonic device.

It is also important to remember that this is not just costume jewellery, this is a moment of time in fashion history, it is an out of production piece. It would have been made in the costume jewellery edition as to be accessible to all buyers, yet, the price today is quite high and the buyer will do well to think of these as small investments in design. A good parallel is the Andy Warhol prints of various celebrities, which, at the time, were created in large numbers to be accessible to all buyers, but today, are extremely expensive.
